Polish pianist, pedagogue, editor, and composer, born in Kraów, 1913. After winning eighth prize in the Chopin Competition in Warsaw in 1937, he toured as a pianist in Europe, South America, and Japan. He became a professor at the State Higher School of music (later the Academy of Music) in Warsaw, where he held the piano chair from 1964 to 1972 and again from 1974. He also gave master classes around the world. In 1959 he became editor-in-chief of the "National Edition" of Chopin's complete works. From 1985 he also served as president of the jury of the Chopin Competition in Warsaw. In 1964 and 1974 he received the Minister of Culture and Arts Award, First Class.
