The Shih Pao, one of the three greatest newspapers in China at the beginning of the 20th century, was founded by Ti Chu-ching on June, 1904 in Shanghai. Soon after the foundation, it became the most favorite with the Chinese intellectuals and a newspaper every student must read, because it devoted much space to articles on culture and education, and of the Chinese mind. As Dr. Hu Shih indicated, it proved a great eye-opener for the Chines people of the day. After 30 years of publishing, the paper ceased operations in 1939. It goes without saying that the newspaper is indispensable to the study of modern thought or culture of China.
