After the defeat in the war, the Allied Occupation Forces censored or entirely suppressed the freedom of speech and thought. The Gordon W. Prange Collection which contains several hundred thousand Japanese language publications and unpublished materials from the Allied Occupation period prove this unknown fact. The collection contains approximately 13,000 censored titles of publications and materials published from 1946 to 1949. Materials no longer found in Japan are also involved in this collection.
Japanese and Americans together accomplished the project of microfilming all the 3,500 magazines titles and 9,500 issues which were virtually censored out the press.
