Ulysses has been called the most important literary contribution that has been made to fictional literature in the twentieth century. James Joyce (1882-1941) sought to tell the world of the people that he encountered in the forty years of his sentient existence. He has described their conduct and speech and has analyzed their motives and he determined to tell it in a new way - not in a straightforward, narrative or sequential manner but in parodies of classic prose and current slang. His prose also contains occult and mystic symbols found throughout the work. While the language of the text has been called base, vulgar, vicious and depraved, Mr. Joyce's reply to this is: "This race and this country (Ireland) and this life produced me - I shall express myself as I am." |
